Tatyana Stepanova, piano, is a noted performer and teacher, praised by the Chicago Tribune as a “fine” and “persuasive” pianist. She graduated from the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory (Kiev, Ukraine) and Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory of Music (St. Petersburg, Russia), where she worked as an assistant professor while completing her doctoral degree in piano performance under Prof. Tatyana Kravchenko. After winning first prize in the Russian National Piano Competition in 1981, Ms. Stepanova taught piano at the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory for nearly a decade before moving to Chicago. Her concert appearances here include Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts; live WFMT broadcasts with the Heritage Trio; Rush Hour Concerts at St. James Cathedral; and performances with the Storioni Ensemble. She has appeared frequently as a soloist with Concertante di Chicago, with which she has performed, among other works, Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos. An active chamber musician, Ms. Stepanova has performed with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the orchestra of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Chicago Chamber Musicians, among others.
Much of her career has been devoted to collaborative music-making, particularly with violinists. Since 1991, Ms. Stepanova has accompanied the faculty and students of Northwestern, DePaul, and Roosevelt Universities; she has also been involved for many years with The Stradivari Society, performing with world-class artists. In addition, she has participated as an accompanist in the Oistrakh, Paganini, Wieniawski, and Indianapolis International Violin Competitions, as well as the Stulberg International String Competition. She also enjoys an active career as a teacher. Ms. Stepanova’s piano students are among the winners and finalists of numerous competitions, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Youth Auditions. Since 2001, she has been on the faculty at Midwest Young Artists (MYA), teaching the sonata class and coaching chamber groups, and she has also served as a faculty member at various summer festivals, including the Summer String Academy at Indiana University, Cursos Internacionais de Musica de Guimaraes (Portugal), and the Beverly Hills International Music Festival.
