| Upcoming & recent performances "The apex of Thursday night's concert was CBASO concertmaster Sara Su Jones' deeply engaging performance of the Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1. Ms. Jones is a violinist of enviable gifts, and her account of this repertory standard was at once invigorating, lyrical and dramatic. Who knew so much theater existed in a broad stroke of the bow? From her rich, burnished tone in the Adagio to the flexibility of the festive Finale, Ms. Jones pulled her audience in and kept them there."

A special note on the October 23 concert at St. James Cathedral:
The Beatitude
Mass: Voices of the Homeless
Sunday, October 23, 3:00 PM
St. James Cathedral
65 E. Huron (at Wabash), Chicago, IL 60611
Concurrent with photographic artist Michael Nye’s striking exhibit, “Hunger and Resilience,”
featuring the portraits and voices of the hungry and homeless, the St. James Cathedral Choir
and Chamber Orchestra present Henry Mollicone’s haunting “Beatitude Mass:
Voices of the Homeless.” This mass setting, anchored by the traditional Latin
texts of the mass, is interspersed with writings by homeless people, set to
music.... a moving experience for performers and audience. Rosalind
Lee and Evan Bravos will be the soprano and baritone soloists.
The concert will begin with Howard Helvey’s beautiful
“O Lux Beatissima” and Arvo Part’s “Beatitudes,” a powerful, contemplative work
for a cappella choir and organ.
The program also includes Arvo Part’s “Spiegel im Spiegel” (“Mirror in
the Mirror”) for violin and piano, which will be performed by Sara Su Jones and Jonathan Wheat,
both of whom are also members of the Cathedral Choir. (To hear a sample of this sublime piece, visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8ZScAdV8qE.)
The concert will conclude by 4:15 PM.
Please bring non-perishable food items to the concert for distribution to
those in need.
Suggested donation: $10 for adults, $5 for
students. Free for children under
12. This concert is part of the
St. James Cathedral Concert Series, which runs each year from September through
May and features both the Cathedral Choir and visiting artists. Visit http://www.saintjamescathedral.org/musicschedule0910.asp
for information on other concerts in the series, including the free Family
& Children Series on Saturday evenings (next event: Silent Movie Night on
November 12).
More information on the choir and the exhibit:
St. James
Cathedral Choir: The professional St.
James Cathedral Choir, directed by Bruce J. Barber II, has been heard live
on 98.7 WFMT. The Choir’s CD of Advent Lessons and Carols (“Arise, Shine!”) on
the MSR Classics label was named one of WFMT’s top holiday recordings of 2010. The Cathedral Choir’s performances during
the year include full-scale concerts (often with chamber orchestra), a service
of Advent Lessons and Carols, and choral evensong on the first Sunday of each
month.
Michael Nye’s
“Hunger and Resilience”: You may wish to arrive early on October 23 to view and
experience the interactive exhibit “Hunger and Resilience” before the concert. See the NPR story
on “Hunger and Resilience” and experience a sample of the images and voices in
the exhibit; a Chicago Magazine article appears here. Each of the 50 portraits in this exhibit is
accompanied by the individual’s own voice, telling of the experience of hunger
and revealing each person’s courage and fragility. “In simple, eloquent detail, these voices and images
draw you closer into their lives. These diverse audio narratives take us
underneath complicated issues where empathy and understanding begin. Each face,
each voice invites you to listen.”
The exhibit is open Wed - Sat, 12-6 PM, and Sun 12:30-3 PM through
October 30.
