Reading room
If you are looking for an edifying way to procrastinate, don't go to Facebook, YouTube, or MySpace, and don't play video games or watch TV. Instead, spend time here in my reading room (click on the different "rooms" in the menu on the left, starting with the "must-read" articles). Here, I post links to articles and websites that I deem noteworthy, thought-provoking, amusing, or otherwise worth reading. Most articles come from the New York Times (NYT), with the rest from the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Chicago Tribune, Economist, and other sources.
(Need a more concrete reason to read these articles? They are full of wonderful examples that you can use in your SAT, ACT, SSAT, and ISEE essays!)
In general,
it's an excellent idea to spend a few minutes a day perusing the New York Times online: skim the headlines and select one or two interesting articles to read in full. You'll gain knowledge of current events, enhance your vocabulary, and broaden your perspective. This daily habit will help make you a thoughtful citizen and contributing member of society.
You can also check out my
blog (and comment on particular posts).
I welcome comments on articles found in the reading room. In addition, feel free to e-mail me to suggest an article or link that you think other students would find interesting.
Note: Articles that span multiple categories are cross-indexed (e.g., listed under both "The mind" and "Science"). I often post some text from the article (paraphrased or quoted) immediately after the headline, to give you an idea of what the article is about. But you should always read the entire article.
